'There's an Elephant in my Room', Pafuri Camp
The landscape in this part of the Kruger is very different from the monotone Mopane-veld encountered from the Olifants River north; as you cross the Levuvhu River, you enter a magical kingdom of baobab trees, fever tree forests, and the stunning Lanner Gorge. Accompanying the glorious scenery is an astonishing variety of birdlife, large herds of elephant and buffalo visiting the rivers in season, the Big Five and plentiful general game.
In this, the third of our Kruger2Canyons' podcasts, we learn about recent innovations in this area which led to the establishment of the Makuleke Contractual Park as the first part of the Kruger to be passed under full control of the previously relocated community.
'Spaces' at the Outpost
Two community members, both senior members of staff at the Lodges we visit, talk us through the process of restitution, and the value conservation and the continued inclusion of the region into the Kruger National Park.
Pafuri Camp and the Outpost Lodges are both innovative, luxurious destinations. Both have beautiful situations on and over the perennial Levuvhu River, and represent quite different approaches to style and atmosphere in the bush.
Lanner Gorge
We go out to explore the magnificent Makuleke region from both camps, taking in the stunning Lanner Gorge, the fever tree forests, the baobab groves, and the infamous "Crooks' Corner" where the boundaries of three nations intersect.
