Kruger Gates Likely To Close Over New Year

SKUKUZA- Kruger Park officials expect Park quotas to be reached on Christmas Day, Family Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

“Day visitor quotas are in operation at all 10 Kruger gates” said Dr Freek Venter, the park’s acting Executive Director.

Quotas operate all year round but are usually only reached on weekends and public holidays with Easter and Christmas the most popular.

“They are filled on a first come, first served basis and once reached, a gate is closed except to those who have bookings.”

Kruger is also the major contributor to SANParks’ overall income and day visitors over the Christmas/New Year period will pump at least R125,000 a day into its coffers before any spend on food, refreshment and curios is taken into account. This is worked on the basic conservation (entrance) fee of R30 for South Africans. Foreigners and SADC citizens pay more.

With only limited accommodation still available in the park the daily income for Kruger this year is about R1 million.
